Tree of 40 Fruits

November 5, 2016

The DAI (Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut) of Heidelberg will host artist Sam van Aken with his project tree of 40 fruits.

Trees of 40 fruits is an ongoing series of hybridized fruit trees, sculpted through the process of grafting. Each tree is an unique combination of up to 40 different stone fruits along with their variants: peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries, and almonds.

The result is an astonishing piece of art that blossom in variegated tones of pink, crimson and white and that brings a multitude of fruits, helping also to preserve native and antique varieties not normally available.

Sam van Aken would also like to bring his dialogue to the maker community. It is a great chance to discuss the scientific and bioethical implications of his artwork and how the DIYbio movement can contribute to this process.
